  • Sun 26th Oct Judo Course with Olympian Karina Bryant

  • Judo students and coaches from multiple organizations travelled from across the country to attend a Judo master class at the Parks leisure center, North Shields where they were put through their paces by soon to be five time Olympian Karina Bryant.
Karina Bryant is one of the UK’s most successful heavyweight female fighters. After a prolific judo career as a junior player, in which she won two Junior World Championships and one European Junior Championship, Karina Bryant made the tricky transition from junior to senior level judo almost effortlessly when she won her first senior European title in1998. She is a 5 time world silver medalist and two time bronze medalist. She is also a four time European champion. Tall and strong, yet also skilful, Bryant’s repertoire of techniques include a powerful Tsuri-goshi, Tani-otoshi and Tsuri-komi-ashi. In 2003 Karina was voted European female judo player of the year and was in the Sunday Times top ten sportswomen of the year. The pinnacle of her career came when she competed in her 4th Olympic games in London in 2012 where she took an Olympic Bronze medal. Karina took time out of her hectic schedule to travel to the north east for this course before she sets off to Australia to train for her fifth Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.
Dermot Heslop (British Judo Association Technical Officer) 6th Dan travelled from York for the event and stated “It is an honour to train with such a prestigious judoka who is a credit to her sport”.
The event was organized by Simon McKenzie from www.combateffectivetraining.co.uk and was a great boost for the area.
