21st December - Christmas Party, Seghill Club
The Bushido Academy of Judo, held its Christmas party at Seghill Social Club, Seghill along with Seghill Judo Club and Battle Hill Judo Club, Midway through the proceedings the annual presentations were made to the judoka's of the year.
As in previous years four trophies are awarded, two for Bushido Judo Kwai, one for each of the evenings that we practice, one for Battlehill and one for Seghill. The awards are made to pupils whom have demonstrated their ability to regularly win the monthly club trophy, while very importantly showing excellent technique and fighting spirit, as well as showing consideration to our younger members. All of the recipients have shown the ability to do this over the last twelve months of regular training.
Battle Hill Judo club presented their Trophy of the year to Frazer Burns whom is an outstanding young Judoka whom always demonstrates excellent Judo etiquette . Battle Hill also presented Tasmin Brown with the clubs Trophy Shield, given to the judoka with the highest points from the years competitions. Tasmin was presented with the shield after gaining 16 trophies from 16 tournaments.
6th December - Bushido Grading, Burnside College
Bushido Academy members from Bushido Judo Kwai, Battle Hill Judo Club and Seghll Judo club attanded a Judo grading held at Burnside College, Wallsend. The grading was supervised by Chris Dawson 6th Dan with assistance from numerous club Shodans.

30th November - Nage no kata Course, Burnside College.
Chris Dawson hosted a kata training course in readiness for our next grading, assisted by Malcolm Young & Kev Corden.
22nd November - NACYP, Westgate.
Battle hill Judo club managed to come away with two gold, silver, a bronze and three runner ups from 7 competitors. The two gold’s went to Frazer burns in under 40kg and Tonicha Brown in under 35kg. Both of which fought very strongly to go on and win two contests with ashi-waza, Frazer also won his final fight for gold by demonstrating very effective Osaekomi waza.
The silver went to Jac Cotcher in under 35kg, who battled his way through his first 3 fights and was then unluckily defeated in his final fight for gold The bronze went to Tonicha’s sister Tasmin in over 50kg, who won two from three contests.
9th November - Gateshead Open
Gateshead Leisure Centre was host to the Northern Area u18yrs Open Judo Championships, which had four of Battle Hill Judo Clubs students in attendance.
Sisters Tonicha and Tasmin Brown were both successful in gaining a silver award from the u32 and u70kg groups, both girls winning three from four contests.
Frazer Burns and Callum Thompson followed with a Gold each in the u38kg and u55kg categories, both boys were un-defeated on the day and gave exceptional performances for the club.
19th October - IBF Open Bedford
Sisters Tonicha and Tasmin Brown represented Battle Hill Judo Club at the same event.
Tonicha struck gold in the girls U30kg, after winning both of her two fights with straight Ippons, both from newaza.
Meanwhile, her fifteen year old sister Tasmin brown also secured a gold in the girls U70kg after winning all three fights with Ippon after demonstrating some very good fighting involving a nice ura nage and o-uchi gari which helped towards her end result of winning with Ippon.
11th October - British Nationals, Sheffield
Sheffield was host to 2008 British Judo Championships, which saw judo players from the ages of 12-18 years competing to earn National titles.
The Championships, which are supported by Sheffield City Council's Major Sports Events Unit, were held at iceSheffield for the fourth consecutive year and was an opportunity to watch some of Great Britain's top young sporting talent in action. This year a record number of 850 young players entered the event at the Sheffield International Venues (SIV) arena.
The tournament is categorised into weight and age groups, with gold medallists becoming National Champions. The English gold medallist also automatically took a place on the England Talent Development Programme. This programme aims to prepare players for progression up the World Class Performance pathway, with the ultimate goal of winning medals at the World Championships and Olympic Games.
Densign White, Chairman of the British Judo Association said, "I am delighted that this year we have record numbers competing. The young talent taking part in the Championship weekend may be taking their first steps on a journey to success at the highest level. To have the chance to compete in such a fabulous venue will be a fantastic experience and one that they will never forget.
Battle Hill Judo Club travelled to the event with three competitors, Callum Thompson from Forrest Hall, Tasmin Brown and Frazer Burns from Cramlington.
Tasmin was first to compete in the u16yrs girls under 70kg category. Out of a group of 16 strong competitors, Tasmin battled hard to reach the Bronze Final, where she was just defeated by the Kendal 2008 Champion, to finish 5th.
Frazer Burns joined 26 other competitors in the u14yrs u38kg category, reaching the quarter finals, only to be defeated by the person Frazer defeated in the final of the Great Northern open in Newcastle the previous weekend.
Callum Thompson, in a group of 18 young men in the u55kg u14yrs group, won every contest to reach the semi finals, he was then narrowly defeated by the boy who later that day, became the British Champion at this weight. Callum picked up an injury during this contest but managed to battle through to win the bronze final, to take 3rd place in the group. This has also gained Callum a position on the England Squad.
Malcolm Young, coach of Battle Hill Judo Club said "All three competitors fought extremely well, and are a credit to their Judo Club and the North East, it was a fabulous experience for them to participate at the event, and to hold their own with the best in the country, and potential future Olympians".

4th October - Great Northern Open, Newcastle
Battle Hill Judo club took four judoka to the Great Northern Open Judo Competition held at Westgate Community College. Over Two Hundred and fifty competitors from around the country took part in the regions largest judo tournament. 10 year old Tonicha Brown was awarded the Gold Medal in the Girls u35kg, and entered the higher u40kg event successfully winning a Bronze award. Sister Tasmin Brown aged 15 also secured a bronze award in the girls u70kg category. Kieran Tweedy aged 9, and Frazer Burns aged 13 were both undefeated, winning three contests each in the boys u28kg and u38kg categories to both return with well earned Gold awards.

27th September - Bushido Training Course, Wallsend
The Bushido Academy Of Judo spent a day teaching novice Judo students at Burnside College in Wallsend. Students from Battle Hill Judo Club, Bushido Judo Kwai and Seghill Judo Club were instructed by Chris Dawson 6th Dan, assisted by Malcolm Young and Darren May.
The course focused on variations of O Soto Gari (major outer reaping technique), various combination techniques from Ippon Seoi Nage (one armed shoulder throw), and numerous ne-waza (groundwork techniques).
5th July - Neil Adams Training Course, North Shields
Neil Adams MBE 7th Dan Judo , World Champion , Twice Olympic Silver Medalist , Five times European Champion and Welsh National Team Coach, hosted a Judo training session at the Parks North Shields. Neil was assisted by John Tierny & Duncan Stewart.
Eight students attended the course along with Barry McSherry and Malcolm Young.
26th July - IBF Open, Dumfries
Battle Hill Judo club took six competitors to the International Budo Federation, Scottish Open International Judo Championships at Dumfries and returned with an impressive 3 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze Awards.
Tonicha Brown u30kg Silver, Kieran Tweedy u 30 kg Runner Up, Frazer Burns u40kg Gold, Callum Thompson u55kg Gold, Marc Chirnside o60kg Bronze, Tasmin Brown u70kg Gold.
Tasmin aged 15 from Cramlington also took part in the Senior Ladies Open, and gave a good performance to secure the Bronze award.
28th June - Kent International
The Kent International Judo Championships 2008 were held at the prestigious K2, a new state of the art leisure centre located in Crawley, West Sussex.
Seven Students from Battle Hill Judo Club made the four day trip to the event, which had competitions spanning two full days.

The first days action saw Kieran Tweedy & Tonicha Brown competing in the U16yrs U27 and u32kg categories respectively. Being only 9 and 10 years of age they fought strongly against competitors above their years.
The second days started quite eventful, with our mini bus encountering a blown tyre on the motorway to the event. After some more than welcome Police and RAC intervention we eventually made it to the event, who were holding back our categories.
Jac Cotcher won two from four contests in the u16yrs u34kg event, while his brother Joe Cotcher fought through the u16yrs u38kg category winning numerous contests in his 42 strong field, and made it to the final eight. Joe was defeated in the quarter finals and just missed out on a medal.
Callum Thompson was runner up in the u55kg category, whilst Marc Chirnside made it to the semi final in the u16yrs u55kg category. Marc was defeated in the bronze final and was placed 4th.
Tasmin Brown competed in the u16yr u70kg group and following an exceptional sacrifice technique, secured a bronze award, and the clubs only medal of the day.
14th June - GB Team Championship, Kendal
Frazer Burns was included in the Northern Team who competed at Kendal winning Silver.
7th June - Northern Area Junior Championship, Redcar
Battle Hill Judo club took five of their Judoka to the Northern Area Open Junior Championships held in Redcar, Cleveland.
An exceptional days Judo was to follow, with the students competing in seventeen contests throughout the day, winning sixteen of them, returning with an amazing four Gold awards and one Silver.
8 year old Kieran Tweedy from Seghill, started the day off with Gold in the u27g by winning three contests culminating in a Ogoshi technique winning with Ippon (maximum score) in 6 seconds.
10 year old Tonicha Brown from Cramlington secured a Gold award, winning all of her contests in the Girls u32kg event. Tonicha demonstrated some very impressive ne-waza (groundwork) techniques, and a clinical Okuri-ashi-haria technique, seldom seen at this level of competition.
Sister Tasmin Brown aged 15, battled strongly through four contests in the girls u70kg event, winning all contests with Ippon to secure the squads third Gold award.
Frazer Burns aged 13 from Cramlington, demonstrated an impressive repertoire of Judo wining all three contests with Ippon each with different techniques, including an exceptional O-uchi-mata. Frazer was awarded the Gold in the boys u38kg category, and was also selected to represent the North East in the 2008 National Teams championship in Kendal.
Callum Thompson aged 12 from Forrest Hall, had a very strong group of six contestants, all ranked Blue and Brown belts in the boys u55kg. Callum won his first three contests and was narrowly defeated in the final against a judoka three years his senior, to return with a Silver award.
1st June – Fordley Novice
Battle Hill Judo club entered six students into the Fordley Novice Judo competition, held at Croftway School Blyth. The competition is only for students whom have practiced Judo for less than two years, and ideally suited for students with little competitive experience.
Stephen Tideswell runner up primary boys u25kg, Charlotte Powton bronze primary girls u30g, Ola Lachowisz bronze primary girls u30g, Callum Chirnside primary boys u35kg, Barry Mossman junior boys o45kg.
David Collinson out performed all other in the junior boys o45kg, winning all his contests with Ippon (maximum score) to secure the Gold Award.

10th May - Bushido Grading, Wallsend
The Bushido Academy of Judo held a Judo Grading at Churchill Community College. Thirty Junior and five senior students were in attendance from Bushido Judo Kwai, Battle Hill Judo Club & Seghill Judo Club. Students were required to complete a strict Judo syllabus, compete against fellow judoka and demonstrate judo Kata.

Tim Awarded First Kyu (brown belt)Tim demonstrated his knowledge of nage-no-kata (forms of throwing ) to a very high standard before competing in a pool of five men, three of whom he defeated while one had to withdraw due to injury, and was awarded his first Kyu.
Tim, 16 years old joined the Bushido Judo Kwai in 1998 under judo coach and fourth dan Sharon May.
He has become the club’s most prolific medal winner since 1980 and is a student at Sir Thomas More School in North Shields. Tim is now an assistant instructor with the club’s junior class, when he assists instructors Chris Dawson and Jimmy West.
It will be 18 months before he will take his next big step in his judo career, when he is examined for his first dan black belt.
Tasmin Achieves Double Awards
Fifteen year old Tasmin Brown from Cramlington has achieved double Judo honours, with a club coaching award and junior black belt status.
Tasmin achieved a club coach award following a ten week training programme where she has covered all aspects of Judo tuition, learning the principles of both teaching and coaching. Tasmin has learned how to demonstrate Ukemi, Ne-Waza and Tachi-Waza to Judo students, including the prearranged form of throwing (Nage-no-kata), defined by Judo’s originator Jigaro Kano.
She was presented with the Battle Hill Judo Club Coach Award by her Judo Instructor Malcolm Young 3rd Dan, and assistant coach Kev Corden 1st Dan.
Tasmin completed a rigorous Bushido Academy of Judo Grading held at Churchill Community College, which required her to be capable of demonstrating over sixty Judo Techniques, comprehend over twenty judo commands, demonstrate all fifteen techniques of the Nage-no-kata, and compete in a pool of five Judoka.
Tasmin was assessed by Chris Dawson 6th Dan, Sharon May 4th Dan and Barry McSherry 4th Dan, and was successfully promoted to 3rd Kyu San-Black (junior black belt), the highest grade possible for a junior judoka.
Tasmin has been a Judo student since September 2000, when she started her training in Cramlington at the age of seven, she then joined Battle Hill Judo Club in June 2004 where she has honed her skills as both a student and now an assistant coach.
Over the last three years Tasmin has entered Twenty National competitions in places such as Nottingham, Bedford, Hull, Newcastle, Dumfries and Carlisle, and has secured 18 awards. She has attended various Judo Technique and Kata courses and last year she was also honoured as Battle Hill Judo Club’s Student of the year.
4th May – BJA Cumbrian Open, Carlisle
Six students from Battle Hill Judo Club journeyed to Carlisle to enter the Cumbrian Open Judo Championship. The event fought under BJA and IJF rules was well attended with almost three hundred competitors from England, Scotland and Wales.
Tonicha Brown secured the first medal with Silver in the u12 yrs Girls u32kg event, followed by her sister Tasmin with silver in the u60kg ladies category, Tasmin earned her award well with three well fought wins from four contests.
Marc Chirnside was runner up in the boys over 55kg group, while Kieran Tweedy secured a bronze award in the u10yrs u27kg winning all bar one contest. Frazer Burns followed suit in the boys u38kg event, where he was narrowly defeated by the current British champion in that weight group, and followed with two wins to achieve a Bronze. A further Bronze award was won by Joe Cotcher in the largest group of the day the u12 yrs u38kg's. Joe fought through five rounds of contests, with only one defeat.
12th April - BJC Graded Tournament
Battle Hill Judo Club took eight competitors to the British Judo Council graded championships held at Croftway, Blyth.
Most Judo competitions are structured so that students compete in various weight categories, this event differed in the fact that all students were competing against students of a similar Judo grade irrespective of weight, this being a more traditional form of matching Judoka as traditionally experienced in Japan.
Bronze awards went to Tasmin Brown 1st Kyu girls, Frazer Burns 3rd Kyu boys, Jac Cotcher 5th Kyu boys and Tonicha Brown 4th Kyu girls. Bronze and Silver awards in the 4th Kyu boys went to Joe Cotcher and Marc Chirnside respectively.
The Primary boys category were to see the clubs two Gold award winners with Kieran Tweedy in the 5th Kyu boys, and a fabulous performance by Callum Chirnside whom was undefeated in the Novice boys category.
22nd March - Durham u18yrs Judo Championship
Battle Hill Judo Club took six competitors to the Durham Judo Championships held at Spennymoor Leisure Centre.
Kieran Tweedy won all of his contests convincingly to reach the final of the Boys u12yrs u27kg category, and returned with a silver award. Tonicha Brown girls u12 yrs u32kg lost her second fight, but fought through the reportage stage to secure a bronze award. Frazer Burns won three from four contests to be the second strongest in his u18yrs u38kg group, and returned with Silver. Callum Thompson secured three wins from three contests to gain the Gold Award in the u18yrs u50kg, Callum was also offered a place at the BJA regional squad training sessions. Marc Chirnside gave a brave performance against much superior opposition, and managed to gain a bronze award in the u18yrs u66kg event.
Tasmin Brown entered the Ladies u70kg and Ladies Open categories; she convincingly won the Gold in her event and secured the bronze award in the open category.

26th January - Newburn BJA Age Banded Open
The Newburn Age and Graded Open proved to be a very attractive and the event attracted an entry of 341 judoka from over 40 clubs from around the country. Battle Hill Judo Club had six competitors in the event, and was extremely pleased to return with six awards.
Callum Thompson fought convincingly through the group stages with four Ippons (maximum score), but an unfortunate mistake saw him defeated in the final stage. Marc Chirnside was entering his first Judo competition, and performed well. All competitors gave great performances in what was to be an extremely strong event.
Kieran Tweedy Bronze u30kg, Toncha Brown Bronze u36kg, Frazer Burns Bronze u38kg, Callum Thompson Bronze u50kg, Marc Chirnside runner up u66kg, Tasmin Brown Bronze u70kg.
Frazer Burns was also awarded the Boys Player of the day for some spectacular Judo techniques.
13th January - Bushido Grading, Wallsend
