New students from Battlehill Judo Club have recently completed a six week introductory course where they have learned the Olympic martial art of Judo, and following the success of this course are now training on an additional day, training on Mondays and Wednesdays at Churchill community college.
Additional funding secured through Sport England, is enabling the club to offer additional free six week Judo courses for both children and adults, the course will include all equipment necessary for the duration of the course, and students will undertake their first grading upon completion. A parent of two of the new students commented “I was looking for an activity for my sons (7 and 8) and I heard about the six weeks free judo sessions at Churchill Community College. The second my wife and I walked in we knew what a wonderful organisation this was. We were made to feel so welcome and my sons immediately enjoyed the training. They teach young people to work hard, be disciplined, show respect and above all have fun. I was so impressed with the club that I joined a month later. At 39 years old I never believed that I would have the confidence to take judo up. It was the family atmosphere and the dedication to promote judo to the community as a martial art and sport that convinced my wife and I that we want our sons to be part of this judo family”.
Three of the clubs students have recently returned from Scotland, where they took part in the International Budo Federation’s Scottish Open Judo Championship.
Damien Anderson was runner up in the Senior Men’s black belt event, whilst Tonicha Brown of Cramlington won all her contests to secure the Gold in the girls u54kg category. Joe Moody aged 8 from Wallsend secured Gold in the 19kg event, and bravely entered the u12 year u25 kg category where he was narrowly defeated in the final to gain the Silver award.
