Battle Hill Judo club took a squad of sixteen junior students to a local competition at Seaton Burn. The event, organised by Fordley Judo Kwai, was for novice students only, which was ideally suited to Battle Hill, currently in their tenth month.

With a strong field of approx 100 competitors, ranging from Six to Fifteen years of age, the students gave an exceptional performance returning with an incredible 15 trophies; 6 Gold, 6 Silver and 3 Bronze awards.

Boys Under 10 Years, under 25kg category had three of the students within the same group. Connor Wynn successfully won enough contests to secure the bronze. Jac Cotcher won three contests with a combination of O-Soto-Gari (major outer reaping throw) and groundwork combinations. His Brother, Joe was to meet him in the final, after winning his previous three contests with numerous excellent Te-Garuma (hand wheel) throws. The final was a close contest with Jac scoring 5 points, before Joe overpowered him gaining 7 points to secure the Gold. "Big" BillyAtkins was runner up in the Boys under 10 Years, under 30kg weight category.

Boys under 10 years under 35kg, was won very convincingly by Callum Thompson age 8 years. Not content with one Gold, Callum also entered the Over 10 years category of the same weight, joining two other students from Battle Hill, Darren and Justin Blundell. Justin gained a runner up trophy, while his brother took the Silver with one of the days best techniques, a spectacular Ippon-Seio-Nage (one handed shoulder throw). Callum, meanwhile, once again won all his contests against Judoka up to four years his senior, with an exceptional achievement of a maximum score, winning another Gold.

Shantelle Blundelle, lost her first contest in the girls under 10 years, under 30kg category, but returned strongly winning her following two contests with Kesa and Mune Gatame (Scarf and chest holds) to secure bronze.

Girls under 10 years, under 35kg saw Katie Young winning most of her fights with various techniques including a very efficient Seio-Otoshi (shoulder drop). Katie was narrowly defeated in the final by a Koka score (3 points) to take the Silver Award. Katie aged 8 years, also wished to compete in the over 10 years category, and was delighted to follow in Callum’s footsteps winning the Gold award.

Natasha Smith, aged 7, took the Gold in the girls under 10 years, under 45kg, and looking for some additional experience joined seven other girls in the over 10 years group. Pippa Schofield and Kimberley Johnston were also competing in the same category. All girls fought extremely well, gaining runner up awards, in what was a very competitive and skilful group.

Boys under 40kg and 45kg, saw Jordon Cotcher and Jacob Brown, giving very strong contests, each gaining Silver in their respective categories. Daniel Wynn, after watching his younger brother gain a bronze earlier, stepped up the pace and joined Jordon & Jacob with a Silver in the under 50kg category.

Scott Corden was unfortunate to be unable to compete in the Boys under 55kg, due to lack of entrants in that weight category. He was however undeterred and agreed to move to a higher weight category. He won both his contests against much bigger opposition, utilizing his favourite technique Harai Goshi (sweeping loin), to gain the Gold in the Boys over 55kg weight category.

Two of the clubs senior students, Dave Colwell and Kev Corden also officiated at the event.
